How it's calculated
Pump prices are AAA daily state averages for regular, mid-grade, premium and diesel, including AAA's own "week ago", "month ago" and "year ago" figures. The pre-war option uses the AAA national regular average of $2.96 on Feb 26, 2026, with today's grade spreads applied, so it is an estimate.
Vehicle mileage is the EPA combined rating for that model year, engine and fuel, from FuelEconomy.gov (27,000 combinations, 1995–2027). The fuel grade is the one the EPA tested it on, which is the manufacturer's requirement or recommendation. Heavy-duty trucks aren't EPA-rated, so those use typical owner-reported figures.
Gallons per year = miles ÷ MPG. Annual cost = gallons × price. The gap is today's annual cost minus the comparison period's annual cost, using the same miles and MPG for both, so it isolates the price change. Per fill-up uses a typical tank for the vehicle class.
